Immediate Volunteer Needs
At Our Daily Bread, we LOVE our volunteers. In fact, we wouldn't be here without you. In 2008, ODB volunteers dedicated 10,300 hours to our programs, and there is still plenty of work to be done! There are many ways to volunteer with us in both short-term and long-term capacities.
Below are some immediate volunteer needs, but if you have a skill you would like to share with us, let us know. We're open to suggestions. Contact us to learn more.
If you're interested in any of these volunteer positions, call the listed contact at 703-273-8829 or e-mail them at the provided link.

Mentors will be matched as soon as possible. Training will be provided. Contact Laura Vaughn. See our Financial Literacy Volunteers page for more information and upcoming training dates. We have a special need for Spanish speakers and for volunteers to participate in a new partnership with OAR of Fairfax.
- URGENT NEED -- Holiday Office Assistants. Work with Our Daily Bread's staff in our office to help administer the Holiday Program. Duties include: contacting clients who have been referred to the program by social workers to ensure the accuracy of their information; responding to donor and social worker e-mails; helping with mailings. Willingness to make phone calls and basic computer knowledge are essential. We ask for a commitment of at least 2-4 hours per week during office hours (between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.) from late September to mid-December. If you would like to devote more time, that would be wonderful! Contact Laura Vaughn.
- URGENT NEED -- Holiday Helpline Volunteers (Work from Home!). Help clients enroll in the Holiday Program so that we can match them with donors to receive Holiday assistance. Options include staffing the Helpline live for a 2-4 hour period of your choice between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or returning messages from applicants during the evenings or weekends. For those interested in staffing the Helpline live, we can forward the phone line to your home for the time period you're able to help. For those returning messages, you can check our answering machine remotely and make calls from home, or we will e-mail you names and phone numbers of people who need return calls. We have a great need for Spanish speakers to help with this project. Contact Heather Webb.
- URGENT NEED -- Foreign Language Translators (Work from Home!). We need Spanish speakers and those who speak other foreign languages (including Vietnamese and Arabic) to help our Holiday Program donors communicate with the families they are providing assistance to so they can arrange to deliver meals and gifts. Donors would contact you by phone or e-mail in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and in early to mid-December for assistance. Contact Heather Webb.
- Food Collection and Deliveries. ODB needs local organizations (businesses, community groups, neighborhood or social groups, churches) to commit to collecting non-perishable food items and making a delivery to 30 of our Food clients on one or two Sundays per year. Contact Christina Garris.
- Office Assistants. Help Our Daily Bread staff keep our records up to date and provide the best service possible to our clients. Recent grants have created more administrative work than ever, and we need your help! Flexible hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays. A commitment of two hours per week would be most appreciated. Duties include data entry, some filing and organizing and special projects. We will put to use any special talents you have to lend! We have a great need for those willing to make phone calls to help us stay in touch with clients. Contact Christina Garris.
