Empty Bowls 2009: A Night To Remember

Many thanks to all of you who made Our Daily Bread's February 26, 2009 Empty Bowls event at Old Town Hall in Fairfax City an unforgettable evening! Approximately 250 people turned out to share fellowship and a simple meal of soup and bread. Attendees purchased beautiful hand-made bowls, enjoyed live music and participated in raffels and a silent auction.

We have received a lot of positive feedback from attendees. Fairfax City Councilman David Meyer, who with his wife Cindy donated the use of Old Town Hall for the event, said "...the round tables and simple soup fare [created] a sense of close community among the attendees.  Several people at my table remarked about how enjoyable it was to sit and have conversations and visit with friends and neighbors." He added, "I also want to commend you on the variety and number of volunteers, especially those volunteers who were teenagers. They were all great."

Our Daily Bread raised more than $10,000 to help fight hunger and homelessness in the Fairfax County area. Add that to the generous cash and in-kind donations of numerous sponsors, and the total comes to nearly $20,000, making this our biggest fund-raiser ever! We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from our community.

We are also pleased to note that Empty Bowls was a green event. Most of our paper products, including paper bowls, napkins and plates, were donated by Whole Foods Market in Vienna, who took back all of their products that night to recycle. With their help, we were able to recycle approximately 90 percent of the disposable materials we used that night.

Many Thanks to Our Empty Bowls Sponsors for a Fabulous Evening!

And Many Thanks to Our Empty Bowls Volunteers for Making It All Happen!
